Navigating Gender Dysphoria and Gender Diversity in a Therapeutic Setting: An Introduction


This is an application based presentation and is meant to enhance skills in navigating conversations regarding gender diversity and gender dysphoria in a therapeutic setting. This presentation includes a discussion of gender diversity across the lifespan, language and terminology clarification, discussion of relevant research, the distinct importance of developmental stages in gender identity, and treatment considerations.

  1. Explain the rationale for accurately utilizing evolving language and terminology associated with gender diversity.
  2. Describe the impact of developmental levels on therapeutic considerations when working with gender diverse populations.
  3. Recognize the potential impact of cisgender privilege and related biases in clinical thinking when working with gender diverse clients.

This session is at the intermediate level and is designed for psychologists and other mental health professionals.

This session qualifies for 3 continuing education credits. You must attend the full program to receive continuing education credit.

Tera Jansen, Psy.D., LP, CST

Tera Jansen, Psy.D., LP, CST is the Clinical Director at Natalis Counseling & Psychology Solutions in White Bear Lake, as well as the Sexual Health & Gender Program Director. She has completed a postdoctoral fellowship at the Program in Human Sexuality at the University of Minnesota and is an AASECT certified sex therapist. Dr. Jansen received her Psy.D. in Counseling Psychology from the University of St. Thomas in Minneapolis, Minnesota. In addition to providing clinical services across a wide variety of sexual health and gender concerns, Dr. Jansen has served as adjunct faculty at the University of Minnesota and the University of St. Thomas, where she has taught graduate courses in sexual health and gender.
