African-Americans reside in all seventy-seven minnesota counties, but almost all of the Black psychologists practice in the twin cities. There are only twenty-five licensed Black psychologists in the state; who also serve other communities of color. The African-American community is underserved and the demand cannot be met by Black psychologists alone. In addition, rural psychologists do not have access to training on African-American clients. This is a training to support the cultural-competence of all psychologists. The training will focus on obscure aspects of Black culture, non-verbal behaviors impacting psychotherapy, racial justice, and effective strategies for working with African-Americans.

Objectives:

1. Analyze African American emotions and behaviors from a cultural perspective.
2. Recognize appropriate clinical boundaries and engagement with African American clients.
3. Recognize the common discomforts psychologists experience with African American clients.   
4. Apply effective strategies in clinical practice with African Americans.
